A Short Man's Guide to the Perfect Suit

Though some people say that being average sucks, they are still lucky because society's rules and standards are always revolving around them. One example in particular is fashion. Most clothing items are readily available for the Average Joe's. Unlike for shorter people who usually have difficulties when

it comes to dressing up. Not all clothing stores have stuff for them on the rack. Shorter men usually end up sacrificing look because their shirt or pants just don't fit them.

This is also true when it comes to getting a suit for formal occasions. Vertically-challenged men usually end up wearing a suit that is too big on them and just looks sloppy. And if they want to look really good on a suit, they have to spend a little bit more on either altered off-the-rack suits or bespoke ones. Either way, more cash shed.

But of course, shorter men still have other options when it comes to getting that perfect suit without spending more. All they need is some of the basics of suits and they will be on their way to fashion royalty.

The Right Cut

It's not a secret that having perfectly cut clothes specific to certain body type can do good. And that is true for shorter men who wants to look taller on suits. Cutting the suit in the right way can give the illusion of height to shorter men. There are many trade secrets that most tailors use to achieve the effect of height on vertically-challenged men when making suits. Hollywood fashionistas and stylistas has been doing it for many years. Some of the shorter actors who have benefited, as seen on how they walk the red carpet, from these tricks on suits include Tom Cruise, Al Pacino, Jeremy Piven and Dustin Hoffman. They are usually seen wearing suits cut in a specific way to make them look taller.

The Truth About Short Suits

Short, Regular and Long –  these are the three common “lengths” or sizes for off-the-rack suits available on most clothing stores. What many people don't know is that these are actually sizes that are portioned and graded out from the fit of an average guy, which is the ideal sizes for fashion. The dimension for this ideal man is 6' in height, with 38” chest and 32” waist. Suits made for these sizes can still be good for those who stand at least 5'9”. But for men with a height of 5'7”, which is the global average for men, the standard size is still very big. Rarely will you find suits that are shorter that can fit on shorter men. The cold fact is that most suits are made to be too big for shorter men.

Finding the Best Fit

However, there are ways shorter men can still be able to look good on a suit. In fact, there are two important steps in being able to find that perfectly fitting suit for even the shorter guy. The first is to find a good local tailor that understands the principles of altering clothes for shorter men. This guy will help you get that perfect fit so that you won't look so sloppy when wearing a suit. Next step is to find a suit designer or brand of suit that offers cuts that work well on you. A good way to start is to find a brand with “shrunken suits”. A shrunken suit is a suit that is made to look short on a regular length cut. But if you can't find a brand with certain cut of suit, here are some clues that will help you find one that will fit your size:

1. Look for shorter cropped jackets that will give you the illusion of longer legs.

2. Look for lower rise pants, which you will pair with a shorter jacket, again to have the illusion of longer legs.

3. Look for a plain hem pant with no cuffs.

4. Get a slimmer cut and dark colored suit with pinstripes. As much as possible, don't get suits with horizontal lines or bulk.

5. Try to avoid suits with breast pockets, lower jacket pockets, flaps and other details that will give away the proportions of the suit when altered.

Once you've find the suit described above, take them to your tailor and have him alter the length to your specifications. This way, you'll be sure that everything will fit you perfectly without any parts of the suits hanging out because they are too big or too long.

Last thing you need to do is to pair your finished suit with the right furnishings. This includes shoes, ties and dress shirts that create a streamlined and simple look. One way to do so is to go for the monotone look. But this doesn't mean wearing a dark shirt on a dark suit. Try pairing a navy suit with a white shirt, dark tie and black shoes. Throw in your best black belt to achieve the perfect monotone look that will give you an illusion of bigger and taller size. Remember that less is more when creating the illusion of height.
