How to Wear a Tuxedo

Going to a formal event wearing a tuxedo doesn't always have to mean looking like a silly penguin. Knowing and doing the right things may actually turn you into the evening's head-turner sporting that go-to formal clothing item. But the question is how does one look sharp in a tuxedo?

First thing you need to know is when is it really the right occasion to wear a tuxedo. If, say, an invitation to a wedding or the theater says thattuxedo is “optional”, then your only option is to actually wear one. But again, even if it does not specifically stated that the attire should be tuxedo, if you're going to a very formal event, you should put some extra effort by showing your best.

Now that you know when you can wear a tuxedo, now it's time to know how to. First thing to remember is that wearing a tuxedo is all about fit. Your tux should fit you perfectly like a dream. Aside from looking good and elegant, perfectly fitting tuxedo will give you the feeling of comfort all evening, which is what you need when going to formal events with a whole lot of talking and socializing with other people.

The next thing you need to decide on is what style of tuxedo to wear. There are actually many options, but three that are very common and acceptable are the following:

1. Single-breasted jacket – This is the all-purpose option when it comes to tux. It has an elegant look due to its classic style. And not to mention, it can fit all body types and sizes without sacrificing the look.

2. Double-breasted jacket – Another common option for tuxedo style. However, this style is more suited to taller men because of its boxy shape and cut. If you're under the six-feet mark in height, better stay away from this style.

3. Shawl Collar Jacket – This is the style that Sean Connery made famous as James Bond. Though it still looks good on some people, the style has just stopped being fashionable.

4. White Dinner Jacket – This option is only suitable when attending a black-tie affair in a tropical climate. Otherwise, you shouldn't be caught wearing one because you'll just look foolish.

Knowing what accessories to match with your tuxedo is also a very important part in wearing one. Accessories include the tie, the shoes, cuff links and shirt studs. The collar style may also be considered as an accessory to the whole outfit.

· Tie – The first thing you need to know about wearing a tuxedo is that you have three options for your tie. The first is if you want to use a pre-tied bow tie. This is the easiest but obviously, the most crude and unclassy option. The second is an actual bow tie, which is the most advisable option because of its sheer elegance and class. However, you don't want this option especially when you're in a hurry or running a little late. This is because wearing one takes a steady hand, a bit of patience and a lot of time, especially if you're not yet used to using one. The third option is using a black tie, which gives a more modern look to the classic tux. This is the best option for an evening with the younger crowd.

· Shoes – There is actually only one choice. No matter what you do, the only thing you can match with a tuxedo are black leather shoes. A pair simple capped toe black dress shoes polished to a high shine is your best bet even on the most formal of formal events.

· Cuff Links and Shirt Studs – If you're renting a tuxedo, stick with the pair that comes with it. However, be on the safe side and always use cuff links in silver or stainless steel so as not to attract any extra attention. A simple design will also help you with this cause.

· Collar Style – Though a band collar with two small points facing down is what most men will use and most fashion expert will advise, using a French-cuffed shirt has started to be the trend because of its more modern look.

These are just some of the things you need to remember when trying to pull off the formal look wearing a tuxedo. Though it's hard at times, all you need is actually the right knowledge and some patience to try so that you can succeed on looking good on tux.
