Made-to-Measure Shirts Explained

A made-to-measure dress shirt is a dress shirt that fits perfectly not only in the standard areas like neck size and sleeve length, but also with regards to the bicep size, hip size, shoulder breadth and other minor but still important parts of the body. The difference of this type of dress shirt from standard men's dress shirt is that it measures the whole of a person, rather than just treating them as necks and arms. The result is a custom dress shirt precisely fitted to the body of the wearer, resulting to a more elegant look.

Parts of the body being measured for made-to-measure dress shirts to ensure the most perfect fit and to achieve the desired effect when worn are the following:

1. Neck – The standard neck measurements still apply for made-to-measure dress shirt. Simple instructions on how to take an accurate measurement of the neck are usually available on online ordering websites.

2. Chest – Chest area measurements are important because it is the main standard used to see if a dress shirt actually fits properly.

3. Waist – Waist measurements allow the shirt to fit the taper of the body, instead of hanging or clinging on it.

4. Hips – Properly fitting dress shirt should be tucked in perfectly, and should not bag or be too tight around the hips.

5. Shirt Length – This measurement ensures that the dress shirt is neither too long nor too short, ultimately giving the garment the perfect proportions.

6. Shoulders – This is where most made-to-measure dress shirts separate themselves from standard off-the-rack shirts because shoulder fit is the hardest to achieve. Made-to-measure shirts are always constructed to accommodate the shoulder width of the wearer.

l Arms – This is actually a standard measurement that is both used for standard and made-to-measure dress shirts.

l Fitting – The fit can be slim, regular or loose. Larger men may find loose more comfortable because it allows more room to move. On the other hand, slim fit shirts are the choice for thin and athletically-built men.

Aside from the fit, made-to-measure dress shirts are also done with the preferred fabric, pattern and texture of the buyer. The style of collar, cuffs and other extra requirements are also dependent to the choice of the wearer. Other details such as monograms and pockets may be standard to some tailors, but can still be altered depending on the request of the customer to suit his style and taste.

Most tailors that offer made-to-measure dress shirt also allows men who do not want to measure themselves the opportunity to buy their product. This is by having customers mail them a shirt that fits the customer perfectly. From the measurements of that shirt, they can construct the desired dress shirt and just add other specifications.

Made-to-measure dress shirts are actually done to make sure that the shirt fit no other person but the owner. They are also a reflection of the wearer's personality and taste in fashion, which separates him from the crowd.
