Types of Dress Shirt Collar

Choosing the perfect dress shirt is hard as it is. And considering there are so many choices out there just makes it a bit more difficult. With different styles, colors, fabrics, patterns, cuff types, etc., it seems that buying the right dress shirt is just impossible.

Another factor that makes the choosing more difficult is the fact that there are over 15 types of dress shirt collars out there. And to think the collar is one of the most important part of the shirt because it frames the face and highlights the facial strength and hides the irregularities. So how can one choose the right type of collar to be able to get closer to that perfect dress shirt? Well, having the right knowledge will certainly be a big help.

Though there are many different styles of dress shirt collars in the market today, these are just derivatives of the three main types, which are:

  1.  Point Collar

This type is the most common and most popular type of collar for men's dress shirts. With this type, the “points” are closer together. Men with round facial features will definitely benefit when wearing this type because the long collar helps even out the look of the face. Men with thin face, on the other hand, should avoid this type as this will accentuate the length of the face.

There are different sub-types of the point collar, including the:
    - Classic Straight Point Collar, which has a ¾ inch tie space with a point length of about 2 ¾ inches.
    - Narrow Straight Point Collar, which has smaller spread between the points at 3 ½ inches. This type makes round faces look less plump.
    - Button-down Point Collar, which has buttons that holds the points to the shirt, giving it a less formal look and can be worn without a tie. It is considered a fashion faux pas if the buttons are left unbuttoned.

  2. Spread Collar

Also known as the cutaway collar, this type allows for more revealing of the upper shirt area. It also allows for larger knot ties such as the Windsor. Men with wider faces should stay away from dress shirts with spread collar because it accentuates the roundness of their face. On the other hand, this type of collar are ideal for men with thinner and longer faces.

The spread collar also have different sub-types, including the:
    - Medium Spread Collar, which s much similar to the point collar, but with wider spreads. Many experts agree that you cannot go wrong with this type of collar.- Classic Spread Collar, which is a very traditional collar that is recommended for thinner faced men and small-boned men.
    - Wide Spread Collar, which is also known as curved spread collar, and has a spread that is 3 ½ inches. This type is not very common and men wearing dress shirt with this type of collar should be cautious as not everyone can wear it.

  3. Tab Collar

This type of collar contains a small tab extending from the middle of each point. The points are then fixed together to make a hook and loop look behind the tie. This pushed the tie forward and up, highlighting the elaborate knots used for more formal occasions. The tab collar is suitable for men with longer necks. Tie should also always be worn with this type of collar.

  4. Pin Collar

This type contains small holes for each point, which allows for decorative pins and bar behind the know which also pushes the knot of the tie up and forward. This provides extra decoration to the collar for more special occasions. This type, just like the tab collar, should never be worn without a tie because you end up having empty holes and flapping tabs, which are very sloppy. This type is also not for everyone.
